Our door is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm for people to:

  • We have lots of different events and activities that happen in Newcastle Common, from fun scientific discoveries to ugly wreath making! These take place at different times throughout the year. Keep an eye on our What’s On page for more info!
  • You can even get comfy on our rather colourful sofas and beanbags to read or even have a go at some relaxing colouring
  • Our volunteers are always on hand to help! You can go to them with questions and queries about Appetite and Newcastle Common, ask them for their book recommendations or for some help with an activity. If you’d like to become a Newcastle Common volunteer, email us at sammyb@appetite.org.uk or call 07951 357389

Kidsgrove Canal Nature Recovery Walks

Take a walk – or four!

Reconnecting with nature and water is a great way to banish the winter blues! From November to March, Appetite and artist Anna Francis are hosting a series of nature-inspired walks along the Trent and Mersey canal at Kidsgrove.

Each walk will have something different. As the seasons progress into deep winter you’ll explore the changes in the landscape with fellow walkers as well as some very special guests. Whether you are interested in foraging, nature or simply joining a friendly activity with others in your neighbourhood, Anna wants you to come along for the walk!

The first Kidsgrove Canal Nature Recovery Walk took place on Saturday 11 November. You can read all about it in our blog, where you can also download a free guide to the walk including information on the plant species you will see.

Schedule

Sunday 10 December  1 – 3pm  Foraging Walk

On this winter foraging walk you will be joined by forager and fermenter Emma Cronin of Wild Pickle. Along the way you will note the surprising number of things that can be foraged in December, and also get an overview of the Forager’s Code of Practice.

Saturday 13 January  11am – 1pm  Biodiversity Walk

Artist Anna and the group will be joined on this walk by a special guest! Andrea Ku is a beekeeper and biodiversity specialist of B4Biodiversity, whose aim is to raise the awareness of urban biodiversity through educational, practical, and creative projects. During this deep winter walk you wil explore what is happening in the landscape at this time of year.

Saturday 3 February I 11am – 1pm I Birder’s Special

In the spirit of the RSP Big Garden Birdwatch, Anna and the group will be joined by artist and nature enthusiast Ben Sadler. Whether you’re a keen sketcher or simply admire our feathered friends, you’re sure to be fascinated as we take a look at the birds who live along the canal.

Saturday 2 March  12 – 3.30pm Foraging & Biodiversity

For the walk series finale there will be two walks with forager and fermenter Emma Cronin of Wild Pickle showing you new things to eat for free as we head into spring. PLUS students on the Staffordshire University Fine Art Course will be hosting an art trail of their work, hands-on activities and mindful meditation sessions throughout the day. Pick up a map from the lodge and explore the art trail at leisure or take a guided walk. Here is a how the day looks:

  • 12pm-3pm Drop-in creative activities and meditation sessions with the students. Plus take part in a Pollinator Habitat Survey with biodiversity specialist Andrea Ku.
  • 12pm Foraging walk
  • 1pm Guided tour of the student art trail
  • 2pm Foraging walk

Booking for the foraging walks on 2 March via Eventbrite is a must. Walk-ups slots MAY be available on the day if people who have booked don’t attend and will be offered on a ‘first come first served’ basis to a maximum capacity of 25 people for the walk.

How to book

GIANT CHOCOLATE GAME | 11.10am

THE NOT GREAT BRITSH BAKE OFF | 12pm

Mimicking the much loved TV show but with zero baking skill required. Join a team to create a conceptual sugar sandwich. A plethora of ingredients are provided for you and your team to create your masterpiece. The ‘not bakes’ then go through rigorous judging before the winner is revealed and rewarded.

THE COLLABORATIVE CAKE | 2.30pm

Join a super long production line to make a cake together. Maybe you are responsible for the sprinkles, the jam, the next sponge layer or the coveted squirty cream. Commentated and jeered by the H&D team to make sure that cake is built with speed and love. Then we all get to eat it!

LUNGE OFF | 2.50pm

Join the ring for, not a dance off, but a lunge off. Go head to head to perform the ‘best’ lunge, not necessarily the biggest, or lowest but most stylish and unique! No lunging ability or experience required.

Coming to Newcastle Common

You can find parking information for Newcastle town centre on the borough council website. There are also a handful of accessible spaces on Merrial Street, and in front of the Art of Siam restaurant on the High Street.

There is one small step into Newcastle Common, though we do have an access ramp that can be used. Once inside, Newcastle Common is on one level and is fully accessible.

The closest public toilets are by the bus station, and there is a Changing Places toilet at Newcastle Library, in Castle House – both within two- or three-minute walk.

General information about Newcastle Common can be found in this Easy Read Word document or Easy Read PDF.

Stories for the Living City

Come along to Stories for the Living City – where you can share YOUR story.

Everyone from Stoke-on-Trent has a tale to be told and we can’t wait to hear yours!

Come along to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery from 12pm to 3.30pm on Saturday 2 December for a joy-filled afternoon of Stokie storytelling and creation with local artists and YOU to help inspire and grow the Living Heritage City Trail by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

  • Tell your tale and make your own six-line story with Shahid Iqbal Khan (Punjab to the Potteries)
  • Be a photographer for the afternoon and explore your city through a lens with Nat Willatt  (Union, Picturing High Streets)
  • The creative power is in your hands! Create your very own character with Kidda Kinsey (illustrator of the trail map!)
  • Create a portrait guided by artist Daby Daby Obiechefu (TRIBES, Featured 23)
  • Share ideas and inspiration of what you’d like to see next from Appetite in the City Centre

What is the Living Heritage City Trail?

The Living Heritage City Trail is a taster of the Living Heritage City project (launching in March 2025) that will connect the archives and collections of our museums to buildings and communities in Stoke and Hanley.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council will aim to work in partnership with local communities along the route and will consult and create with users, organisations and partners to showcase the rich stories and significant heritage of the city.

Read more about the Living Heritage City Trail on the Stoke-on-Trent City Council website.

Punjab to the Potteries: Photography Workshop

Make your own mini portrait and find out the fascinating techniques behind the Punjab to the Potteries exhibition at Chapters Cafe!

As part of the Punjab to The Potteries project, photographic artist Sam Ivin created 23 portraits of the people who contributed their experiences as part of the research. During the process of taking the portraits, Sam took a keen interest in the sitter’s individual stories and used his conversations with them as the basis for the decorations that he hand painted onto each print. Tailored to each individual, they include colourful patterns and symbols inspired by Sikh images and Punjabi fashion.

During this session, Sam will outline his time as a photographer, and the journey from documenting stories of migration in Settling to the Punjab to the Potteries project.

The workshop will discuss different types of portraiture and set practical challenges to take some yourself. You will then print your images and decorate them.

You don’t need to bring any equipment to join the workshop; you can chose to use your phone or a compact camera provided by Sam. PLUS, Sam is offering to troubleshoot one of your own photos! Simply email it along with your query to askus@appetite.org.uk by Friday 20 November and he will go over it with you during the workshop. N.B. you must be happy to share the image in front of the group.

Punjab to the Potteries: Conversation + Q&A

Come along to Chapter’s Cafe, Keele University this Friday 17 November, 6-9pm, and let’s share some great ideas! Join us for the second event in our Punjab to the Potteries at Keele creative series as we explore the evolution of the project so far from one family’s photo collection to two new short plays and a LOT of new friendships!

Plus, give us your ideas for what exciting new directions we can take Punjab to the Potteries in next!

On the evening you will hear from four project members with unique roles, challenges and perspectives:

Gemma Thomas: Gemma is the director of Appetite who, in conjunction with their lead organisation, New Vic Theatre, commissioned the two new plays

Rasandeep Singh Devgon: as an Appetite Community Co-ordinator, Ras worked on spreading awareness throughout the local South Asian community

Valdev Bansal: the original concept of Punjab to the Potteries was Val’s, thanks to some old family photos

Filiz Ozcan: Filiz cast and directed the play readings

If you want to find out how to develop your creative project from concept to completion, come along and pick the brains of members of the team.
