Appetite Presents… The Three Counties Cubes

Appetite and ArtsKeele are really excited to be bringing The Three Counties Cubes to Trentham Gardens, running from Saturday 30 January to Monday 5 April. The exhibition will be in the Amphitheatre area of the Gardens next to the lake. Trentham Gardens are currently operating at a limited capacity, with access to the cubes only available via pre-booked tickets for the gardens.

Run by ArtsKeele the Three Counties Open Art Exhibition has been taking place since the early 2000s and since 2017 has taken place in the historic Burslem School of Art. It is ‘open’ to anyone from Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire to submit a piece of artwork. In spite of the pandemic, The Three Counties team and partners were committed to making it happen in 2020 and the project this year took place virtually with 145 works appearing in the online exhibition in August.

Appetite got involved in the exhibition this year and offered a brand new prize – the Appetite Audience Choice Award. This saw Appetite’s Supper Club come up with a shortlist of 20 works which were then put to the public to vote for their favourite. The winner, runners up and shortlisted pieces can all be viewed as part of the exhibition.

The Cubes will also highlight winners from different categories of the exhibition and some COVID inspired works.

Access at Trentham Gardens

The Trentham Estate remains open and operating within UK Government Guidelines. 

 We are currently operating at a limited capacity, with access only available via pre-booked, half hour slots, with a one-way system in place.

 We have implemented socially distanced queuing systems, made visiting completely contactless. We have hand-sanitising stations, enhanced checks and cleaning throughout the Estate to ensure visitors can feel as protected as possible. Only essential retail remains open within the Shopping Village.

 The Trentham Estate plays an important role in providing access to outdoor space supporting mental health and wellbeing. We continue to offer our community space to exercise and enjoy the natural beauty of the Estate in line with Government Guidelines.

 We continually monitor and respond to Government advice. Any updates will be communicated to our visitors via our website, www.trentham.co.uk, or via our official social media channels.

Appetite Presents: Familiar Faces

Appetite Presents… Familiar Faces

Familiar Faces is a Newcastle-under-Lyme exhibition, by Appetite, Newcastle-under-Lyme BID and GRAIN Photography Hub. The project was created to capture the familiar faces and the unique welcome of Newcastle town centre through the power of photography. Running from Friday 29 January until Saturday 21 August, the exhibition of portraits will be seen across three sites in Newcastle-under-Lyme; on Ironmarket, High Street – next to the war memorial – and High Street – near to Poundland.

Commissioned, local photographer Adina Lawrence captured the portraits of Newcastle workers in the Town Centre during December 2020; to highlight local retailers, shops and businesses and celebrate the historic town centre as it is now. The images shine a light on the diversity, strong offers, culture and heritage of the town and the businesses’ resilience during the most challenging of times.

The exhibition includes portraits that capture the wide range of businesses across the town centre, from business owners and staff to new businesses starting out, thriving market stalls to established shops who have been operating in the town for up to 500 years, independent unique outlets to international chains.

About Adina Lawrence 

I am a Black British portrait photographer from Stoke-On-Trent who has a thing for implementing fantasy like feel to my flamboyant, stimulating images, that will have your eyes darting around attempting to capture every inch, I enjoy the fact that my portraits has you finding something new each time you clasps eye on it, that just pops out at you and steals a few moments of your day.

I am known to have a way of capturing and presenting my images, to have a more metaphorical statement rather than just a still subject, it tells a story yet comes across as subjective and playful.

Every time I look back at a portrait I once took, I relive that moment, each image I take is stored in the endless photography library I have up my head, full of wholesome memories ,fun and stories that I will forever cherish.

Appetite Presents: Windows of Wonder

Windows of Wonder is part of Appetite’s Seasonal Specials programme and is a truly unique illuminated artwork trail popping up in ten shop windows across Stoke-on-Trent City Centre (Hanley). Each window has been designed by artists with the business owners to bring the window to life; day or night. This magical trail will run Saturday 5 December – Saturday 2 January 2021.

Appetite have worked with Stoke-on-Trent City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) to bring Windows of Wonder for the first time to Stoke-on-Trent City Centre. The trail is part of the national Window Wanderland project that sees communities illuminate and decorate their windows, celebrating public spaces and bringing people together.

Together we have commissioned 10 artists to work with 10 shops. The artists have let their imaginations run wild to create their unique Windows of Wonder. Make sure you see them all!

The Three Counties Cubes in Newcastle under Lyme

Appetite Presents… The Three Counties Cubes

Appetite, ArtsKeele and Newcastle under Lyme BID are really excited to be bringing The Three Counties Cubes to the Ironmarket, Newcastle-under-Lyme. Running from Tuesday 24 November to Tuesday 26 January, the Cubes will be providing some art and inspiration to your streets. The exhibition, consisting of 4 large cubes, is open all day so can be enjoyed during the daytime and will illuminate the streets during the dark nights. Whilst out and about doing your essential shopping or exercising, you can catch a glimpse of some stunning local artwork.

We are back in Stoke-on-Trent City Centre (Hanley) this Autumn with our FREE programme of art to get your taste buds sizzling once again!

As the daylight starts to dim at this time of year come along to enjoy our illuminated art, from gigantic metal tripods to art pieces beaming from cubes.

All our activities are COVID-Safe with social distancing measures in place. Please help us keep everyone safe by:

• Hands. Use sanitiser and avoid touching installations.
• Face. Use a face mask if you’re unable to keep 2m distance.
• Space. Keep your distance from those not in your household bubble. For outdoors this is 1m+ although we encourage you to keep 2m distance. Take notice to whether we’ve placed any markings on the floor or any queue management.
• Track and Trace. Please sign in to NHS Track and Trace where you see the QR codes around the site.
• If you have any COVID-19 symptoms, or have been in contact with anyone who has a confirmed or suspected case please do not attend and return home immediately. Get guidance on symptoms here. We will be making provision to allow you to see the work online. Please visit our social media sites.

Seasonal Specials: Shimmer Tree by Dan Fox

Appetite Presents… Seasonal Specials: Shimmer Tree

Shimmer Tree is an impressive six metre high tree-like sound and light sculpture controlled by the wind. As the listener wanders underneath, the directional sound and changing resonances envelope the listener in an evolving and meditative sound bath that responds to the environment.

The sounds include Cumbrian nature samples, such as the red squirrels from Ullswater, curlews from Shap, dawn chorus from Walney Island and bees from Water Yeat.

After dark, Shimmer Tree is illuminated by pixel mapped LEDs that respond in real-time to the sound creating pulses and patterns of coloured light up and around the tree.

Seasonal Specials: Chorus by Ray Lee

Appetite Presents… Seasonal Specials: CHORUS

Intersecting lights trace rings above the heads of the audience, creating the effect of a whirling swarm of fireflies, or of planets in motion, like mesmerising orbits of colour.

CHORUS is made of giant metal tripods support rotating arms. At the end of each arm loudspeakers emit precisely tuned musical pitches creating a pulsating, harmonic drone, singing out a hypnotic siren call that is both uplifting and transfixing.

CHORUS aims to bring a contemporary music and visual art spectacle to a very wide audience. CHORUS was shortlisted for the 2014 BASCA British Composer of the Year award for sonic art.
