A Restorative Afternoon in Stoke-on-Trent

We were thrilled to receive the following blog post from audience member Helen Mollart, who has written about her experience at A Restorative by Sheila Ghelani as part of The Big Feast 2025.

Did you have some words or photos you’d like us to share from The Big Feast or another Appetite event? Do you have some feedback? Or would you like to get involved as a Community Decision-Maker and help us create more magical moments like A Restorative at future events? Get in touch with us at askus@appetite.org.uk – we’d love to hear from you!

A Restorative Afternoon in Stoke-on-Trent

by Helen Mollart

Yesterday I went to my Menopause artwork meeting, we convened in a semi derelict Victorian Church in Hanley (Bethesda Chapel, currently being saved and renovated) and the vestry was set out like Alice’s tea party with fancy china, flowers and hot drinks on a large dining room table. The event was termed ‘A Restorative’ and was part of a city wide BH weekend event called ‘Appetite big feast’.

A lovely lady called Sheila Ghelani introduced the activity and explained what we would be doing. The aim was to make an effective sleep pillow to take home. Our group of 7 ladies was joined by other people and everyone was friendly and engaging. There was a eclectic of people and ages at the table, including a young man and a boy with his mum.

Around the room were placed glass containers with scoops, each one having a handwritten label identifying the contents, which ranged from soil, feathers and sand, to camomile, lavender and rice. The labels reminded me again of Alice in Wonderland, ‘eat me’, ‘drink me’ labelling cake and potion.

We all chose different dried aromatic herbs to sew into a small fragrant sleep pillow. The table layout included posters which listed each ingredient and it’s significance.  Every herb has a significance or efficacy to aid restorative sleep. I chose lavender (for insomnia), cloves (for recalling dreams), bay leaves (for wisdom), dandelion seeds (for hope) and hibiscus (to calm inflamed nerves), all mixed in with dried rice.

Once chosen, the dried ingredients were spooned into glass beakers then poured through a rice-paper funnel into a small cream fabric bag. One beaker full of rice, and half a beaker of other chosen ingredients (around 5 or 6 ) was recommended as a good mixture. The fragrances were intoxicating, especially cinnamon and cloves which to me signify Christmas (as I was born on Christmas Day).

The bags needed to be sewn closed and as our group like handicrafts that was no problem. Needles, pincushion, thread and stork scissors were provided.  If anyone else needed help, Sheila was on hand.  Once closed, the cream bags were folded into a fabric outer pillow covering, constructed like a simple cushion cover, in a lovely blue pattern, pre sewn and labelled by Sheila and the team, a lovely touch.

Then we were invited to move into the main body of the church, where fabric beanbags with throws and woolly hot water bottles were provided. It wasn’t that cold inside the church but it made us feel comfortable and cherished. We each settled down with the sleep pillow over eyes or placed on upper chest. The aroma from my sleep pillow once it warmed up next to my skin, plus the hot water bottle on my legs made me feel serene and relaxed.

To accompany this feeling, I Am Fya (sound artist Anthea Clarke) was on hand in person to create wonderful soundscapes using live voice and loops of recordings including birdsong, bell sounds, and running water. I found this part of the activity a totally immersive experience and could have listened for longer. When I opened my eyes, high above me I saw the decorative ceiling plasterwork/pargetting which has been restored, a fitting conclusion to a Restorative afternoon.

See Saw

Two performers dazzle in an aerial silk routine under colourful lights and draped fabrics. One hangs gracefully mid-air, while the other moves with flair, adding to the vibrant, circus-like vibe of the scene!

See Saw

by Reallynice

Welcome to the other side of the Sun!

Meet Sunrise and Sunset, two siblings who have never met. That’s because Sunrise loves to get up early and play, while Sunset loves to sleep in late and perform her beautiful evening dance when Sunrise has already gone to bed. So it always was. Until one day some visitors arrive…

Can you engage your senses and help Sunrise and Sunset rediscover their balance as you play, swing and move?

From playing in dawn’s first light with Sunrise to swinging in the twilight with Sunset, See Saw is a fully interactive sensory circus experience for small groups of young people with complex needs and their companions. Crafted by, with, and for young people in SEND contexts, this enchanting adventure lets you join the circus and be part of the story.

Spaces are limited to six participating young people per session. Places are free and booking online in advance is advised.

See Saw FAQs

What is See Saw?

See Saw is an interactive circus and storytelling experience. Two storytellers embodying the characters of Sunrise and Sunset will guide participants through the story, inviting them to take an active role. Participants are invited to join the story in sensory slings, though you can stay on the soft mats below if you like.

The activity takes place within a tent-like installation, draped with fabrics and with soft lighting for a calming sensory experience.

Who is See Saw for?

See Saw has been created as an experience for young people with a range of complex needs and disabilities (SEND).

However, we recognise that people don’t fit into neat categories and so a general description may not always be helpful. Here are a few extra pointers to help you decide whether See Saw is right for you and your young person.

What do we mean by ‘young people’?

We would advise that See Saw is most suitable for children and young people aged between 4 and 12. Age isn’t always the best guide for those with SEND, though there is an upper weight limit of 80kg. We recommend 4-12 as a guide to include young people that would have the most meaningful involvement with the storytelling, while also being able to take full advantage of the space and equipment. See Saw was developed in conjunction with young people up to the age of 11.

What do we mean by ‘complex needs and disabilities’?

There is no tick list or minimum requirement to participate, though See Saw was made with those young people in mind who would otherwise struggle to access it in a traditional setting. That could be because they have profound or multiple learning disabilities, Down’s syndrome, those who are non-verbal or pre-verbal, or whose physical limitations are a barrier to participation in other settings.

Are there any physical requirements for participants?

There are no physical requirements for participants including the need to self-support. There are lots of adaptions that can be made for how the young people interact with the apparatus to accommodate their individual needs, which is entirely at the discretion of their parent/carer. For instance, swings can be lowered so that the participant’s weight is partly or fully supported by the floor, they can lie down in the swing, or they may prefer to stay on the mats throughout.

Each participant’s parent/carer will be asked to assess the best way for the young person to interact with or transfer onto the swings. The Reallynice team will confirm that you and your young person are comfortable with the setup before and throughout the performance as needed.

What safety precautions are in place at See Saw?

The Reallynice team consists of two storytellers, plus two additional facilitators, all of whom are on hand to help in any way you direct. For Appetite, there will also be a designated Access Steward, plus an event volunteer.

The performance takes place in The Old Spitfire Gallery, which is an enclosed space with a door. The performance is fully relaxed, so participants are free to move about the space at any time. However, we ask that adult carers ensure that young people are not crossing the centre space where the performance takes place and swings will be in use. The Appetite event volunteer will make sure that nobody leaves unattended who shouldn’t.

While we will make every effort to ensure that your time at See Saw is as safe as possible, we would remind all parents/carers that you remain fully responsible for your young person at all times. This includes their physical and emotional well-being for the duration of your visit.

Please note that while the Reallynice team have two facilitators on hand to support participants, those young people who require 1-to-1 support would be best accompanied at all times by their adult carer and should not be left unattended in the slings or space.

If you have any queries or specific safety concerns before booking, please contact producer.seesaw@gmail.com

Can others join in?

Parents/carers are welcome and encouraged to help their young person navigate the See Saw experience, or depending on comfort levels, give encouragement from the sidelines or simply enjoy the show. We welcome siblings or other family/group members who the participants are happy to share their experience with to enjoy the storytelling as audience members as space allows. Siblings are also invited to join participating young people to explore the performance space during the optional Stay and Play session after the performance.

Photography

Appetite events can include photography. If you would prefer that your young person is not included in photographs taken by our event photographer, make it known to a member of the Appetite team, who will advise the photographer should they be at your performance.

Patois

Five dancers in bright blue trousers and funky patterned tops bust out some moves in front of a grand building with arched windows. Big blue and yellow flags wave in the background.

Patois

by Jeanefer Jean-Charles

What happens when unspoken languages come together?

Patois explores what happens when two unwritten languages meet: the spoken language of Patois (French Creole) and the movement language of dance.

British-Caribbean choreographer Jeanefer-Jean Charles MBE (London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant) reawakens the unwritten language of Patois, telling a story of culture, lost languages, longing and belonging. Of the movement of people across continents and the dialect which is at risk of being lost forever.

Blending captivating traditional Caribbean choreography with exhilarating contemporary dance and an original Caribbean-folk score, this journey across generations touches on universal experiences of identity and celebrating languages as a key to our past and to ourselves, rediscovering hidden voices and identities rooted in dialects that are buried within us, to reawaken cultures, stories and generations of the past.

Now I am Become d/Deaf (Destroyer of Words)

A man in a bowler hat, waistcoat and shorts pulls off a daring split between two upright ladders, one foot on each rung and hands gripping the sides. He’s looking down at us from between his wide-stretched feet, the steely grey beyond him.

Now I am Become d/Deaf (Destroyer of Words)

by Tit for Tat Circus

Celebrate silence… with a touch of chaos.

Words words words. What if we just forgot language for a moment, and connected with something more simple? Something innate, primal, and as loud as a look?

Exploring their own degenerative hearing loss as a source of celebratory play and invention, a clown stumbles before its audience, and dances between the chattering heads and the singing hands of strangers. Tackling cultural boundaries and personal identity through moments of chaos, sincerity, interconnectivity, and utter nonsense. Immerse yourself in a world where the loudest actions are lost in translation, and the tiniest looks become deafening.

A visual spectacle that celebrates silence, and throws a wordless ear-splitting laugh into the face of frustration – in an effort for one clown to simply say “hello!”
