Punjab to the Potteries Community Conversation

🗺️ Porthill Cricket Club  🗓️ Friday 28 April  ⏰ 10am-12pm

Appetite and New Vic Theatre are inviting local people to tell them their stories as part of a project called Punjab to the Potteries. Two scriptwriters have been commissioned to each research and write an exciting new short play based on the journeys of those who have migrated from the Punjab region to the Potteries and surrounding areas.

Val Bansal, who met Appetite as part of the Settling photography project in 2017, came to realise that he had a lot of questions about how it must have felt for his father, Baldev, to migrate to the area as a teenager in 1964. Val said:

“Punjab to the Potteries was an idea that came about when sorting out old photos at home. Looking at them sort of inspired me in a way as it opened an abundance of questions of what it must have been like living in a small village in Punjab and travelling half way around the world to Stoke-on-Trent in the early 1960s to settle: how hard or difficult the journey was, leaving family behind, learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, education and work, food – the list is endless. There must be countless stories and memories as well as many more photos in numerous households of people and families who took a similar journey.”

Baldev worked as a plate maker in the potbanks – a familiar story in The Potteries! However, some of the stories of people from the area haven’t been captured or are sometimes missed. We want to hear from, celebrate and capture people’s lived experiences of migrating to this area from the Punjab region, or being born here and raised in a South Asian family, to inspire our writers – Shahid Iqbal Khan and Sarah Bedi.

As part of their research, the writers aim to capture this wealth of local stories, experience and photographs at a Community Conversation event taking place at Porthill Cricket Club on Friday 28 April, 10am – 12pm. The venue has free parking and is wheelchair accessible. Refreshments will be provided.

Can’t make it to the event? You can still get involved! Share your story by emailing us at askus@appetite.org.uk or call us on 01782 381 373.

If you’re interested in the finished plays, a reading event will take place at the New Vic Theatre on Saturday 12 August. More details to follow.

Down The Rabbit Hole in Kidsgrove

📅 Friday 24 & Saturday 25 March ⏰ 7pm-9pm  📍 Canalside, Kidsgrove

Appetite in partnership with Canal & River Trust are excited to be taking another trip Down the Rabbit Hole!

Over two nights the stretch of canal from Kidsgrove railway station to the north entrance of Harecastle Tunnel will come to life. The experience will include two stunning projections created by story, projection and sound artists, Illuminos, with students from The King’s Church of England Academy. Illuminos have been back to the school this year to work with students to create a brand new projection, with last year’s projection also being part of the evening.

Since January the Bright Ideas project, made up of women of Kidsgrove and young women who are students from The King’s, have been working together with lighting award-winning New Vic lighting designer Daniella Beattie. The culmination of their project will be unveiling a lit art installation that they have created from concept to build, which can be viewed alongside the light show.

As you walk along the towpath you will also Follow the Rabbit, led by a trail of 50 jars decorated with fantastical beasts and magical creatures made by artists and community with B-Arts in 2022.

FAQs

Do I need to book?

Down the Rabbit Hole is a free event, but spaces are limited for safety reasons.

Half of the audience capacity was bookable online in 15 minute slots in advance. This was to make sure that numbers were spread evenly over the two hours each evening. All those slots have now been filled.

The remaining slots are available to those who walk up on the evening on a first come, first serve basis. If you do come along as a walk-up, please be aware that you may be asked to wait until others leave and it is safe to allow more people onto the towpath. We are not able to say in advance how long that wait might be.

Those who did book a slot but are unable to attend are kindly asked to cancel their tickets on Eventbrite or let us know via email to askus@appetite.org.uk so that spaces can be allocated to others.

How easy is it to get to the event?

There will be signs and volunteers to help you find your way.

The main entrance to the towpath will be from the railway station car park.

This entrance has steps. Alternatively, the accessible entrance point is by the drive, accessed just past the Kidsgrove Memorial Garden entrance, located opposite St Thomas’ Church. Please note that this involves travelling over uneven ground.

Wheelchair users and those with mobility issues should be aware that there is a bank that you may need assistance getting up and down. The towpath itself is also narrow and uneven.

Can I park at the event?

Parking is available at Kidsgrove railway station car park and Meadows Road car park.

Kidsgrove station can be found at ST7 1BX. This is a pay and display car park, which accepts cash, card, pay by phone and contactless. It also has accessible parking and is open 24 hours.

Meadows Road can be found at ST7 1BU. This is a free car park, with a maximum stay of 2 hours. It is a 4-minute walk from the Kidsgrove station car park entrance to the event.

On-road parking is also available on The Avenue.

Are there public toilets at this event?

Unfortunately, there are no public toilets at this event.

Is BSL and Audio Description available for this event?

Down The Rabbit Hole does not include any dialogue, therefore we will not have BSL interpretation at the event.

An Audio Description of the event will be shared on social media and on our website afterwards.

Will there be photography and filming at this event?

There will be photography and filming, but if you prefer not to be photographed, please speak to a member of the Appetite team.

Can dogs come along to the event?

Audience members are welcome to bring dogs however we ask that they are kept on a lead at all times for their safety and for the safety of others.

Afrika Joy | Writing with Akulah Agbami | Online Prose and Poetry Workshops

As part of Africa 54, Kwanzaa Collective UK and Appetite invite you to join prizewinning writer and editor Akulah Agbami on Afrika Joy, a four-week online writing and learning journey that will explore different expressions and formats of joy across the continent of Africa. You will use geography, history, art, music, traditions, politics – yes, really! – as inspiration for joy-filled poetry and prose.

The journey will be collective, individual and spiritual as you wind your way treading softly on Afrika’s shifting sands. Writers of all levels of experience (or none) are very welcome.

Online sessions are on consecutive Thursdays 10, 17, 24 November and 1 December, 6.30 – 8.30pm. You are welcome to join as many of the sessions as you like, and are even encouraged to attend more than one to get the most out of the experience.

There will also be an in-person sharing event held on at the end of the journey on Saturday 3 December in Newcastle Town Centre.

Details of how to join the workshops on Zoom will be sent when you register for the event via .

  • Fairground rides

The Potteries Centre will be joining the fun with some Christmas Selfie rooms themed for festive photo opportunities, a shining reindeer and late shopping.

ACCESS

All performances will be family friendly and accessible for wheelchair users. We have additional access support on certain performances including audio description (AD) and British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation. For more information you can:

  • See the listings below
  • View and print our flyer
  • Head over to our Victorian Christmas access page, which includes a social story, trigger warning,  facilities information and some performance previews
  • Talk to the Appetite team and volunteers on the evening at the Appetite HQ gazebo on Tontine Square

A strip of four different acts: a person in trilby and checked jacket stands inside a small flea circus booth performs to the crowd; a photographer in a Victorian suit sits on a vintage looking half moon cut out in front of a box camera on a tripod; two performers on stage performing in front of a crowd; black and white image of a choir of roughly 15 people being lead by a choirmaster.

Still want to know more about what’s in store? We’ve got you covered.

Watch the Birdie! | An old-fashioned photographer with a large format Kodak Camera from 1908 playfully poses people for portraits on a ‘Paper Moon’. A magical alchemical darkroom prints picture perfect moments for keepsakes.

Tontine Square  |  4.00-8.00pm (sighted guidance and BSL interpretation on request)

Penny Arcadia’s Barrel Organ | Enjoy toe-tapping tunes from Penny Arcadia’s Victorian Barrel Organ and be exported to a bygone era.

Tontine Square  |  4.00-4.30pm  |  6.00-6.30 (BSL)*  |  7.30-8.00pm

Dodge | Fagin and Dodge take to the streets in this Dickensian Christmas walkabout. They’re a charming, if touch theatrical, duo. And did we mention that one of them is nine feet tall?

Walkabout  |  4.00-4.30pm  |  7.15-7.45pm

Van Buren’s Victorian Theatre of Wonders | Andrew and Allyson present the unique, fun and baffling show for all the family, which not only entertains but also answers many of the questions about Victoriana, magic and illusion: Can somebody float in mid-air? Will Van Buren escape from Houdini’s Challenge? And is it possible to step back in time or read a mind? This show answers all of these questions, plus many more!

Tontine Square  |  4.30-5 .00pm |  6.30-7.00pm (BSL & AD)*

Corvus Angelicus | These 10-foot-tall luminous angels spread love and light, joy and hope, wherever they go. A breathtakingly beautiful performance that uplifts the spirit and feeds the soul.

Walkabout  |  5.00-5.30pm  |  7.30-8.00pm (AD)*

Professor Jon’s Flea Circus | Professor Jon’s Flea Circus is itching to perform for YOU! Marvel at stars of the Flea world: Bella the Weightlifting Flea, Madame ZaZa on the tightrope, Frederico the Flea Cannonball and many more, all trained from scratch! *No real fleas are harmed during this presentation!*

Tontine Square  |  5.10-5.30pm (BSL & AD)*  |  7.00-7.20pm

Lampshade Ladies | The Lampshade Ladies bring their surroundings to life, fascinating and enchanting audiences wherever they go. Taking inspiration from all things retro and wonderfully absurd, Kitsch & Sync Collective brings you curiously quirky dance, theatre and performance brimming with colourful characters and a dressing-up box bursting with enough vintage clobber to make your gran proud!

Walkabout  |  5.30-6.00pm  |  7.00-7.30pm

A Very Curious Contrivance | The Curious Contrivance, AKA The Flatulator, trundles along with its wings flapping, pistons pumping and the inevitable sounds of gas propulsion. Chocks away! Brought to you by the uniquely bonkers one-man comedy theatre Circus Fudge.

Rideabout  |  6.00-6.30pm  |  7.30-8.00pm

Town Hall Choir with Restoke | Restoke puts the people of Stoke-on-Trent at the heart of their creative adventures, creating unmissable performances in unusual settings. The Town Hall Choir meet every Wednesday, singing polyphonic songs from eastern Europe and Georgia. They will be sharing a selection of Wintersongs from these regions on this special evening.

Fountain Square  |  6.30-6.40pm  |  7.00-7.10pm

*Please note that the access symbols are to the right of the individual performance time that the service is available for rather than every time that precedes them.

A strip of four different roaming acts: lighted angels walk about on stilts; a person in old type flying jacket and cap pedals a contraption with small wings and a steam pipe; tow characters in scruffy Victorian dress, one with an aged face mask holds a jewellery box; a person wears a lit standard lampshade on their head.

Meet the Artists in Residence at Newcastle Common

Staffordshire artists William Ntiamoah and Daby Obiechefu are doing a two-week residency at Newcastle Common as part of the TRIBES: Matabeleland to Staffordshire art exhibition exploring themes of African and Afro-Caribbean heritage, and Afrofuturism.

But what is an artist’s residency? And what is Afrofuturism?

The idea behind an artist’s residency is for them to be inspired by a new environment. Artists tend to work in the same space for most of their time, and a change of surroundings can help them to feel a fresh energy when starting new work.

Afrofuturism is another way of looking at the future of Africa and black people. It’s about looking back to what we know of African culture and history, then looking forward to the future where more Western industrial influence might prevail and imagining how they will blend together. What will that look like? How will images that we are familiar with today as uniquely black African change as technology is introduced?

Daby and William said: “It’s really important for us to have two-way conversations with new people. Without them, and the thoughts shared by visitors, a residency would achieve nothing. We want anybody who is interested in our work as artists, or in the themes we are exploring about and how that might be changing, not to be shy in coming to chat with us. We want you to inspire us!”

Both artists will also be delivering a free workshop as part of Newcastle Common’s week-long programme of half-term activities. And they are hoping that the people who come along will create their own art in residence to be displayed alongside their own, which will be on show at Astley Walk and open to the public 3-5 November.

WILLIAM

William’s first solo exhibition is called Look the Other Way, currently on show at Chapter’s Café at Keele University, is a collection of 10 oil paintings showcasing the everyday life in Africa we never get to see. You can see his work there until 14 November.

During his residency William will also be preparing pages to use as part of his zine workshop. What is a zine? A zine is a DIY magazine that anybody can make using their own drawings, writing or by using found materials such scraps of pages from other magazines or printouts.

The finished zine will be digitized and available for everyone to view online. And elements from the zine might even make it into the final pieces that William creates as part of his residency. So who knows, if you visit the workshop, your ideas could end up on display as a work of art!

DABY

Daby’s work is usually focused on her thoughts and feelings, and she portrays them in her art. For this residency she is inspired by Afro-Caribbean culture and heritage. This will carry over into the sgraffito workshop that you can join for free during October half term. What is sgraffito? Sgraffito is a type of ‘scratched art’, whereby a top black layer covers something more colourful beneath that can be revealed by scratching away the black with a skewer.

During her residency Daby will be preparing the sgraffito cards, which have representations of traditional African patterns as the colour underlayer. She is looking forward to seeing what images people choose to scratch into their card. What inspires them about Africa? Will it be animals, or food? Whatever the pictures that are created, they will be put on display next to her own artworks from the exhibition.

Meet the Artists in Residence: 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 & 29 October, 11am-3pm
