Patois

Five dancers in bright blue trousers and funky patterned tops bust out some moves in front of a grand building with arched windows. Big blue and yellow flags wave in the background.

Patois

by Jeanefer Jean-Charles

What happens when unspoken languages come together?

Patois explores what happens when two unwritten languages meet: the spoken language of Patois (French Creole) and the movement language of dance.

British-Caribbean choreographer Jeanefer-Jean Charles MBE (London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant) reawakens the unwritten language of Patois, telling a story of culture, lost languages, longing and belonging. Of the movement of people across continents and the dialect which is at risk of being lost forever.

Blending captivating traditional Caribbean choreography with exhilarating contemporary dance and an original Caribbean-folk score, this journey across generations touches on universal experiences of identity and celebrating languages as a key to our past and to ourselves, rediscovering hidden voices and identities rooted in dialects that are buried within us, to reawaken cultures, stories and generations of the past.

Now I am Become d/Deaf (Destroyer of Words)

A man in a bowler hat, waistcoat and shorts pulls off a daring split between two upright ladders, one foot on each rung and hands gripping the sides. He’s looking down at us from between his wide-stretched feet, the steely grey beyond him.

Now I am Become d/Deaf (Destroyer of Words)

by Tit for Tat Circus

Celebrate silence… with a touch of chaos.

Words words words. What if we just forgot language for a moment, and connected with something more simple? Something innate, primal, and as loud as a look?

Exploring their own degenerative hearing loss as a source of celebratory play and invention, a clown stumbles before its audience, and dances between the chattering heads and the singing hands of strangers. Tackling cultural boundaries and personal identity through moments of chaos, sincerity, interconnectivity, and utter nonsense. Immerse yourself in a world where the loudest actions are lost in translation, and the tiniest looks become deafening.

A visual spectacle that celebrates silence, and throws a wordless ear-splitting laugh into the face of frustration – in an effort for one clown to simply say “hello!”

Caged

Four people are performing around a white bird cage-like structure of white bars. Three are on the outside, while one is inside on hands and knees. The cage is on a concreted are bordered by stone railings with tall trees and blue sky behind.

Caged

by Linden Dance Company

Take an exhilarating journey to connection.

CAGED is an explosive, evocative dance experience following four characters on a journey from solitude to connectedness.

Inspired by real life stories of isolation and set within, around and atop a three-metre-high birdcage, CAGED encourages a connected, diverse society. The four performers explore ambiguous worlds of entrapment and safety, a delicate balance that ultimately leads to feelings of hope and reconciliation.

The emotive themes are reflected in an athletic, daring physicality and a punchy soundtrack.

Slink this way…

A trio of giant slinkies combine bursts of comic energy with gentle audience participation.

They will shimmy. They will slink. They may well steal your shoes. But they will definitely enchant and delight everyone who comes across them.

Be sure to catch this smile-inducing slice of silliness for all ages.
