SnapperSquad Open Exhibition 2022 at Newcastle Common

Newcastle Common’s Astley Walk space will be hosting the latest exhibition by members of The Sentinel and StokeonTrentLive’s SnapperSquad  from Thursday 7 to Saturday 16 July. Drop-in and see the exhibition daily from 11am to 3pm, closed Sunday 10 July.

SnapperSquad is a group of amateur photographers living across North Staffordshire and South Cheshire, who meet regularly, share images and learn together. Members create images across a huge range of subjects which are showcased in print by The Sentinel, online at StokeonTrentLive and across other social media outlets.

This exhibition shows just a small cross section of the members’ interests and technical abilities, which hopefully will encourage other amateur photographers to try different ways of photographing a variety of subjects.

SnapperSquad is brought together in partnership with The Sentinel, StokeonTrentLive, 1st Cameras and Lehmanns Stoke.

Appetite presents… Lookout in Newcastle-under-Lyme

Appetite presents… Lookout

Appetite presents… Lookout by Andy Field and Beckie Darlington.

Created with local primary school children, Lookout is a one-to-one encounter between one adult audience member and one child performer. Two people of very different ages, meeting to have a conversation. They stand together somewhere high up, looking out at the streets and buildings of the city below, and begin to talk about its future. They see before them the world as it is now and as it might be many years from now.

Performances of Lookout will be taking place on Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 July in the David Weatherfall building on Keele University campus. Tickets for Lookout cost £5 for adults and £4 for concessions and can be purchased from the New Vic website here.

A short documentary following a version of Lookout created with Inside Out Theatre in Beijing.

Transport and parking

The full address for the building is Keele University, Keele, Staffordshire, ST5 5BG and can be found in the centre of the campus.

There is a car park located in front of and to the left of the main entrance to the building. There are 5 Blue Badge parking spaces. Car parking is free on Saturdays and Sundays. There is a bus stop located within 150m (164yds) of the venue.

More about Lookout

First created in Glasgow in 2015, versions of Lookout have since been presented in towns and cities across the world, from Manchester to Shanghai and Cairo to Llandudno. In 2017 the project was awarded the Spirit of the Fringe award at the Auckland Fringe Festival in New Zealand.

Now at this moment of uncertainty and upheaval, Lookout is returning to the UK for the first time in over four years for a series of new performances created with children whose lives have all been affected by the pandemic in very different ways. This is a chance for those children to look toward the future, to give shape to their hopes and fears, to dream both of spectacular sci-fi utopias and all the smaller more everyday changes they think might make their home town a better place to live.

Lookout is a small encounter full of big ideas. An attempt to consider some difficult questions in a simple way. Half an hour out of your day that might change the way you look at your city forever.

‘Lookout is a warning and a challenge: a little thing that leaves big questions behind; an intimate encounter that manages to take in the entire city. It gives you a glimpse of a possible, even a probable, future – one that may or may not include you – and charges you to do something about it. Not for your sake, or for mine, but for the future itself.’

Matt Trueman, WhatsOnStage

‘Lookout breaks the traditional stereotype of the child performer as almost a pet. A child performer here is not just the beautiful, docile and pleasant little creature, but rather a responsible professional who has the responsibility of leading the whole performance and of guiding each spectator on a unique journey where both – the performer and the spectator – stand on equal ground and exchange intimate visions of their lives in relation to the geography of the city and to the personal memories of their respective dwellings.’

Future Cargo Dance Workshop at the New Vic Theatre

Be inspired with this sci-fi dance style workshop hosted by the creators of Future Cargo taking place in the Workspace of the New Vic Theatre on Saturday 2 July 2pm to 4pm.

In this 2 hour workshop, Requardt & Rosenberg, creators of Future Cargo, will share the inner workings of their creative process. Requardt & Rosenberg will draw on reoccurring themes of their work: proximity; audience perspective; the juxtaposition of the miniature and the colossal; and surprise.

Centred around the dance routine that has been created for Future Cargo, this workshop aims to take something that already exists and create something new. Frauke Requardt (Co-Director of Future Cargo) and Valentina Formenti (Dance Captain) will teach material from Future Cargo and encourage a playful exploration of the possibilities of the dance phrases.

They will look at the creative treatment of the movement material and feedback, looking at ways of further developing the material and sharing dance phrases in response to different environments.

This workshop is a Pay What You Decide activity.

Event location

The New Vic Theatre is located just two minutes from the A500 – the main route through the area connecting to routes into the city from all directions, including the M6, A53, A52, A50 and A34. If you’re using a sat nav, use the postcode ST5 0JG to locate the theatre on your device – check it’s directing you to Etruria Road in Basford.

The Workspace building is located in the top left corner of the theatre car park, which you will see as you drive in. It is labelled ‘Workspace’ on the side in white lettering.

Appetite presents… Kids Business by Hunt & Darton

Kids Business is coming to Longton!

Our friends at Hunt & Darton are popping up in Longton Exchange on the search for 5 – 14 year olds to create the next BIG IDEA for a new shop designed by kids, with Hunt & Darton.

We have hosted Hunt & Darton in 2014 with the Hunt & Darton Café in Stoke-on-Trent City Centre and then Radio Local in 2019 as part of The Big Feast. We’re really excited to see what the kids come up with for Longton.

Do you have children between 5 and 14 and want to find out more? Well… you can! Come along to 15 Bennetts Precinct next to Iceland at the Longton Exchange on Sat 11 & Sun 12 June, 11am – 3pm.

Or book onto our weekend workshops:

Or Sat 18 & Sun 19 June: 10.30am – 12.30pm (5-8 year olds) or 1.30pm – 3.30pm (8 – 14 year olds)

Or Sat 25 & Sun 26 June: 10.30am – 12.30pm (5-8 year olds) or 1.30pm – 3.30pm (8 – 14 year olds)

The idea created with the kids from the project will be developed into a shop to be unveiled and open to the public on Sat 2 & Sun 3, Sat 9 & Sun 10 July.

So far, they have created a family-spa in Clacton-on-Sea, and Rainbow Shop in Colchester. What will we create?

Who are Hunt & Darton?

Hunt & Darton are a leading arts organisation in the UK for public, interactive and highly creative activity in normal places. Find out more about Hunt & Darton here

The project is brought to you in partnership with Appetite and Longton Exchange delivered by Hunt & Darton with funding from National Lottery from Arts Council England.

Newcastle Common artist-in-residence Semaan Khawam

As part of Alison Lochhead’s Art for Peace collection, currently on display in our Newcastle Common spaces and at Keele University, we are excited to be welcoming Semaan Khawam into our Newcastle Common space to create art with the community.

Semaan Khawam is a Lebanese painter, designer, graffiti artist, actor, writer and poet. As an artist-in-residence, Semaan will be using our Newcastle Common Astley Walk space as a place to create art with input from the community.

Drop-in sessions will be taking place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from Thursday 9 to Saturday 25 June 11am to 3pm. The sessions aim to open art to the community to encourage self expression. The door is always open for Semaan when he is in the studio. He is looking to have conversations and invite guests to use the different tools available to express themselves. Sessions will be mainly painting, writing and small sculptures.
