Welcome to Sensasian – a festival of events celebrating South Asian culture!

We’re working with our friends and partners at the New Vic Theatre to bring comedy, dance and even a little bit of magic to the theatre with three evening shows on Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 and Friday 12 July.

And if that wasn’t enough, we end the week with a FREE fun day for all ages on Saturday 13 July from 1pm to 5pm.

Here’s what to expect from our sensational Sensasian Family Day:

Bhangra Workshop

Times: 2.15pm & 4pm (Workshop last 30 minutes)

Location: Auditorium 

Join Nachda Sansaar and experience the joyous folk art of bhangra! Learn a mix of traditional and freestyle moves, and create new innovative routines to live music with a Dhol drum.

Music by Amrit Kaur

Times: 1.40pm & 3.10pm (Performances last 30 minutes)

Location: Bar (New Vic First Floor)

Amrit will take people on a journey through women’s history in Punjab, telling stories through her original soul music and Panjabi classics. 

Amrit’s music is a singer-songwriter, Sarangi player and power-house soul/Punjabi folk vocalist whose notable performances include Glastonbury Festival, Jaipur Literature Festival and UN General Assembly alongside the Bob Marley family in New York. 

Film: English Vinglish

Times: 1.30pm to 3.30pm (Includes 30 minute interval)

Location: SJR Studio (New Vic Ground Floor)

A quiet, sweet-tempered housewife moves to America. But her well-educated husband and daughter slight her because of her inability to speak and understand English.

Henna Painting

Times: 1pm to 4pm

Location: Youth Room (New Vic First Floor)

Jamilla’s Beauty provides Arabic/Asian fusion henna designs for henna lovers, combining traditional patterns from both regions to create unique and stunning henna art for individuals to enjoy and admire. Organic henna is a natural dye derived from the leaves of the henna plant. When mixed into a paste it is applied to the skin in intricate patterns and left to dry, leaving behind a beautiful temporary tattoo.

Choogh Choogh by Beeja

Times: 1.15pm & 3pm (45 minute performance followed by a stay and play)

Location: Auditorium

Choogh Choogh is a family-friendly show inspired by the joy of travelling through India on a train. It combines classical and contemporary Indian dance with play and theatre to bring to life a world full of colour and movement. So grab your (real) ticket and get it checked on a journey through sights, sounds, hawkers, festivals, musicians, rivers, jungles and cities.
