Q&A with Appetite Audience Choice Award winner Paige Sutton

The image shows a image drawn with graphite. The drawing shows a room with a chair facing to the right. There is a silhouette of a person sat on the chair.

We spoke to Appetite Audience Choice Award winner Paige Sutton about her award winning piece ‘Hiraeth’, her inspiration and how she felt when she found out she won.

Hi Paige! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m Paige I’m a 20 year old artist from Stafford, I’ve been making art since I was 2 and I’ve aspired to be an artist since I was 12.

Can you tell us the inspiration behind your piece?

When doing a site tour for the series I was doing on the ex-workers of Spode looking around the abandoned building I found all these lonely chairs, which made me think about how I could still feel the sense of community and busyness while it looked so lonely and empty and I found myself wanting to make a piece for Spode itself.

What made you want to contribute to the Three Counties Open Art Exhibition?

I heard about the Three Counties a year ago and since then I’ve loved being apart of it and working with them during the curation.

An oil painting of a portrait of a person. They are looking into the camera and their hair is behind their shoulders.

More examples of Paige’s work (L-R) ‘The Stare’ and ‘We Can’t Go Over It, We Can’t Go Under It’

How important is the Three Counties Open Art Exhibition for students like yourself?

I think it’s a brilliant opportunity for students , not only is it free and for all types of artist, it has a brilliant way of without bias picking the work that’s going to be in the show which gives smaller artist an amazing opportunity.

How did you feel when you found out you’d won the Appetite Audience Choice Award?

I was completely shocked when I found out that I had been short listed for the award and even more when I won, I didn’t realise how much my piece had resonated with people and it was great to hear how everyone saw and interpreted my work.

Is there a particular piece from the exhibition that stood out to you?

There was so many amazing piece this year but some that stood out to me were a piece by Rose Jones , Danny by Peter Fletcher and sleeping dogs by Jackie Bevis.

Where can people see more of what you do?

You can always see my work and behind the scenes on my Instagram and TikTok were I share everything, I am showing my piece ‘Hiraeth’ at the Featured exhibition in Newcastle common and I will be apart of another exhibit sometime in 2025 which will be revealed on my social media soon.
