The Meir Christmas Events Board is working with arts programme Appetite & anonymous Spanish Artists Luzinterruptus to make the 20ft tree using 5,000 carrier bags. The colourful Consumerist Christmas Tree will take pride of place outside Meir Health Centre – at the same time as highlighting environmental issues.
It will replicate one which was a huge success with visitors to the Lumiere Festival in Durham last year. The Consumerist Christmas Tree will dazzle all who see it and there will not be a bit of tinsel in sight.
The tree, which will see the bags turned into giant baubles with lights inside, will be lit up on Friday, December 5.
Janet Bellis, Meir Christmas Events Board chairman, said: “I have seen photographs of the one in Durham and it looks superb. Appetite hosts a lot of projects around the community and we are glad they have given us this chance. Our show will be great this year. We will have parades, a nativity show and Christmas market stalls.”
A series of workshops will be held where local people can help turn plastic bags into giant baubles.
