Paines Ploughs Roundabout Theatre Returns!

The world’s first ‘pop up’, plug and play theatre returns to Stoke-on-Trent!

We’re very excited to announce that this October sees the return of the wonderful Roundabout by the critically acclaimed Paines Plough. The amazing pop-up theatre that wowed audiences last year will be back in City Centre Hanley from 20-23 October with a fab programme of outstanding new theatre for you all to enjoy.

There will be plays for the nippers, plays for the adults, plays for big kids and something for us all! We’ll be announcing the full line up soon so keep your eyes peeled for news.

We hope to see you inside this beautiful venue as the winter draws in!

Forgotten Places: Falling in Love with Stoke Again

Forgotten Places: Falling in Love with Stoke Again is an exhibition showcasing new photography by members of Brighter Future’s Appetite arts hub, Lullaby, inspired by their home town of Stoke-on-Trent.

Participants have been working with professional photographer Dan Burwood, director of Birmingham based Some Cities, learning different aspects of photography from portraiture and storytelling to close up photography over the course of 6 weeks. With their new photography skills they have explored and captured the city on foot.

Forgotten Places captures a selection of the participants’ photography in screen and wall based installation, reflecting the breadth of approaches experimented with over the course and hidden aspects of Stoke-on-Trent the aspiring photographers have uncovered.

Brighter Futures helps people with multiple and complex needs develop skills, gain confidence and live safe fulfilling lives.

Some Cities is a Community Interest Company that uses participatory photography to give a voice to the people and communities of Birmingham. Some Cities believes that photography can be used to share knowledge and create opportunities for dialogues and understanding between communities.

Avian Avenue: Stoke-on-Trent 1988 Launch

Avian Avenue, a new iPad/Android game from Dovetail Foundry explores the stories of the British terraced house over the past 100 years. Set on an ‘ordinary’ terraced street, every home tells its story – each from a different decade and from a different city in the UK. Players uncover the mysteries, hidden histories and human stories of each home, through the objects they find inside.

For the past year, Dovetail Foundry has been hunting down local stories from a turbulent period of Stoke-on-Trent’s history, inspiring the opening chapter – Avian Avenue: Stoke-on-Trent 1988.

Launching in the app store later in 2016, join them for the local launch of this fantastic new interactive game where you can:

  • Play the game before it’s available to the public
  • See the stories that went into making the game
  • Watch large-scale projection-mapped graphics
  • Hear Dovetail Foundry speak about their time in the Potteries

Forgotten Places: Falling in Love with Stoke Again Exhibition Launch

Forgotten Places: Falling in Love with Stoke Again is a new exhibition showcasing new photography by members of Appetite hub, Brighter Futures inspired by their home town of Stoke-on-Trent.

Participants have been working with professional photographer Dan Burwood, director of Birmingham based Some Cities, learning different aspects of photography from portraiture and storytelling to close up photography over 6 weeks, and exploring and capturing the city on foot with their new photography skills.

Forgotten Places captures a selection of the participants’ photography in screen and wall based installation, reflecting the breadth of approaches experimented with over the course and hidden aspects of Stoke-on-Trent the aspiring photographers have uncovered.

Exhibition Launch

Photographer Dan says: “I’m not from Stoke, so it was fantastic to encounter some of its places and their stories, alongside the project participants. This was a discovery, and a rediscovery; we’re rooted in our many places and the memories these places hold, but we remake those connections when we pool them and share them with others.”

World of Wedgwood Invites Visitors To ‘Play With Clay’

Anyone who did not get to take part in the World of Wedgwood’s Hey Clay event in December now has another chance to see if they are a Master Potter in the making, with a weekend of ‘Play With Clay’ activities taking place in its Master Craft Studio from 30th – 31st January.

Visitors will once again be able to step up to the potter’s wheel and create their own unique piece of pottery, with help from one of World of Wedgwood’s skilled experts. There is no charge for making a pot, as any unfired clay can be recycled by the World of Wedgwood. For those who would like to keep their work of art though a firing and posting service is available for a small fee.

Heather Broadhurst, General Manager at the World of Wedgwood, said:

“We have been bowled over by the amount of enthusiasm our visitors have for trying their hand at making their own pot. Once they have seen the wonderful collections in the Wedgwood Museum and taken a Factory Tour they are very often inspired to find out for themselves just how much skill and creativity is required to make even a simple vase. The process of throwing a pot is absorbing but exciting at the same time and we are delighted to have the facilities and experts here to allow the public to experience it first hand. People can literally pop in on either the 30th or 31st January to have a go – it’s the perfect activity for anyone out there wanting to start the year by trying something new.”

The World of Wedgwood’s Play With Clay activities will be running on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st January. All ages are welcome and no booking is required. The Master Craft Studio is free to enter. Prices to have a pot fired start from just £10 plus postage.

World of Wedgwood opening times are: Monday to Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am – 4pm.

Free tickets are now available online for the spectacular opening ceremony to Stoke-on-Trent’s year as the UK’s European City of Sport.

It takes place on Saturday, January 30 at Northwood Stadium, from 7pm and the first 1,000 tickets are available from today at stoke.gov.uk/OnYourMarks.

You can also register to take part in a massive dance routine on the pitch of Northwood Stadium on the same day, as part of the celebrations. No experience is required, just lots of enthusiasm. Sports clubs and active community groups are also being invited to take part in a people’s parade during the event. The true stories of Stoke-on-Trent’s explosive 1842 Chartist Riots are brought to life in Reading the Riot Act, an unmissable interactive performance taking place in the grand former Fenton Library by the ground breaking visual theatre company Periplum!

Sign up and turn detective on this intimate journey through Fenton Library, where visual installations and iPad navigation lead you through a portal back in time.

Created with the voices of local people, follow the eye-view of local miners or pottery workers unwittingly caught up in the drama and discover the hidden stories of the day the riots rippled across the 6 towns!

Dates: Saturday 28 – Sunday 29 November 2015
Times: Performances every 10 mins from:
6pm – 8:30pm Saturday
1pm – 3.30pm Sunday
6pm – 8:30pm Sunday
Duration: 30-40 mins
Info: Audience members choose either the Miners’ journey or the Potters’ journey through the experience. 2 tickets are available for each journey per slot. Please note, audience members enter the performance in pairs.

The performance is suitable for ages eleven upwards and under 16’s to be accompanied by an adult throughout the experience. Unfortunately due to the nature of the venue this event is not wheelchair accessible.
