In 1768, equestrian, entrepreneur and showman Philip Astley, born in our very own Newcastle-under-Lyme, drew out a ring and filled it with astonishing acts – tumblers, horses, acrobats, jugglers and clowns – and created the first circus. The artform went on to become an international phenomenon, travelling to all corners of the globe, and on its 250th anniversary its longevity is testament to its accessibility for audiences of all ages.
CIRCUS! curated by the V&A is an outdoor exhibition bringing together prints, documents and images from the museum’s collections that track the fascinating history of the artform in the UK over the past 250 years. CIRCUS! illustrates some of its remarkable acts, characters and developments and showcases this phenomenal artform on a grand scale.

To celebrate 250 years of the modern circus and the home of it’s father Phillip Astley, you can expect exciting projects across Newcastle-under-Lyme all year long as part of New Vic Theatre’s Circus Past, Present and Future programme. Supported by Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence programme, Circus Past, Present and Future will champion Astley’s extraordinary legacy in his birthplace of Newcastle-under-Lyme throughout 2018.
