See Newcastle Under Light!

Wednesday 4 March

Drop in any time 6pm – 9pm. FREE!

Location: High Street around The Guild Hall leading into Ironmarket.

Light Up Newcastle is the third and final event in our✨ Light Up Winter series, which includes Light Up Middleport (21 & 22 Jan) and Light Up Hanley (3 & 4 Feb).

Featuring immersive artworks, projections and interactive installations, the Light Up Winter series will transform familiar spaces into glowing, playful places to explore after dark.

Each of the three events in the series will feature different artists and artworks, and a special vibe that reflects the community where it happens.

At Light Up Newcastle, you will see a beautiful sound and light pagodafantastical, huggable fungus; and a large-scale projection onto The Guildhall that you can contribute to!

With thanks to our Newcastle Under Light partners Newcastle-under-Lyme BID and Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.

Sneak peeks

Voice Notes from Newcastle-under-Lyme

leo&hyde combine digital artistry with their music theatre skills to create extraordinary indoor and outdoor projections, and immersive experiences.

For Newcastle Under Light they will be creating a unique, large-scale animation that will be projected onto The Guildhall.

We are calling on members of the public – YOU! – to co-create the piece with them by sharing your memories and photos of the town. Drop-in sessions are on Saturday 7 February, 9.30-11.30am in Belong Village, and 12.30-3.30pm in Newcastle Library

The day will be a casual, creative day, -with a chance to share your stories with Leo and artist Joseph Doubtfire, and try your hand at a range of digital and collage art making techniques – which you’ll then get to see projected onto the Guildhall itself as part of the big event on the 4th!

Can’t make it? You can also submit your tales by voice note! For full details, and to see some prompts to spark your stories, visit the Newcastle Under Light Workshop blog post.

And while we can’t show you anything until the final piece is revealed, you can enjoy some of leo&hyde’s previous work, like this delightful work with Croome.

Squeeze Me

If you encountered Unfurl or LUMA the snail at previous Appetite events, you’ll know that Air Giants’ inflatable, and illuminated robots create an otherworldly environment that invites pokes, touch, and squeezes from audiences.

Squeeze Me creatures respond with synchronised shape-change, vibration, light, and sound.

This interactive experience captivates the senses, offering a mesmerising marriage of technology and imagination.

It's a dark scene of trees and grass. Attached to the closest tree is a large, art installation glowing in soft white. The inflated artwork looks like three claws at branch level that attaches to a large oval bulb at ground level, the two connected by an umbilical-like cord. In the back ground, two more are in trees further down the row of trees.

And… Breathe

Pif-Paf are a small company based in Sheffield who make art with a big heart for places it doesn’t normally go.

And… Breathe is their new installation exploring breathing – alone and together – through mindfulness and interaction with lights and sound.

Breath is such a powerful tool for us all to find security and calm both in the moment and in our lives. With a pair of lungs, a few minutes and the right place, we can find surprising joy. So stay a while and immerse yourself. We hope it will leave you feeling calm, invigorated and in control.

The Appetite programme and Light Up Winter series of events is funded by National Lottery through Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places programme. With additional event funding from UK Government, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, Denise Coates Foundation, and Middleport Matters. Light Up Winter is delivered in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID, Newcastle-under-Lyme BID, and Stoke Creates.
