We’re looking for artists to work with us on Green Town, our latest project at Newcastle Common.
Interested in; gardens and outdoor spaces, rethinking the use of our town centres or the climate crisis? Then we want to hear from you.
During April we’re going to host a month of debate, discussion, and provocation in Newcastle Common, our shop on the High Street in Newcastle-under-Lyme. As part of that we have six opportunities for artists – one commission and support for five artists to present existing work or work-in-progress.
New work commission: £5000 fee
This is for one artist, working in any medium, to make a new piece of work to be exhibited in our shop in April. We’d like something that has a presence all month, so if you’re proposing a performance, for example, we’ll be looking for something that occupies the space and engages visitors even when the performance isn’t happening.
Our suggested breakdown of the budget is – 2 days Feb, 4 days Mar, 8 days Apr, 1 day May at £250/day £3750, Costs £1250. Let us know if you want to change that!
Show and tell: 5 × £1000 fee
We have five fees which could be used for artists to show existing work, to perform an existing piece, to showcase a current architectural project, or show the research and development on a future piece of work. Or these grants could also support voluntary sector use of our spaces. We’d like something that has a presence in the shop all month.
Our suggested breakdown – 3 days Mar/Apr at £250/day to include install and a meet the artist event, Costs £250
How we’d like you to respond
We want to make it as easy as possible to respond.
- We’d like you to read the provocation which you can find here. If you think your current work, or work you want to make, fits with the ideas we’re presenting, or that we’ve missed something you’ve thought of, we’d like to hear from you.
- Send us one side of A4, telling us which opportunity you’re interested in and why. Let us know what will happen in our shop – for example work on the wall, a performance, an installation. Tell us how far you’ve got with this work: is it made and ready to go, already in research and development, or just an idea on the back of an envelope? Tell us a bit about your previous experience, and any work exploring similar ideas. And if you’re less experienced but have a great idea, please get in touch.
- Deadline for interest is 12pm Friday 25 February
- Please email your submission to askus@appetite.org.uk with Green Town in the subject heading.
We’re working with a-n daily rates, and also providing production support and mentoring with more experienced artists, including our Lead Artist Dan Thompson and the Appetite team.
So far, we’ve held a few open calls for different artists to work with Newcastle Common, and we’ve not only commissioned one artist each time, but given others some seed funding to work ideas up. We’ve also held webinars for everyone who got in touch, so we’ll invite everyone who gets in touch to an online event where we talk through the ideas in our provocation.
