Good news: Appetite awarded grant to continue its work for three more years!

We are thrilled to announce that Appetite, which aims to get more people to experience and be inspired by the arts in Stoke-on-Trent has been awarded a £500,000 Arts Council England grant to continue its ambitious work for a further three years.

The Appetite programme, led by New Vic Theatre, has been awarded further funding as part of Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places Programme, which aims to transform arts activity and involvement locally and seek to get more people in the city engaged in the arts.

A major investment in the cultural life of Stoke-on-Trent, continuing to partner with the New Vic Theatre on the next three years of the Appetite project are: Partners in Creative Learning (PiCL)6 Towns Radio and Staffordshire University, working alongside Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

Beginning in 2013, over the past 6 years Appetite has brought spectacular family-friendly arts events to the city’s streets, parks, hospitals and more, all with the aim of getting more people to experience and be inspired by the arts.

More than 450,000 people have enjoyed a feast of world-class arts including The Enchanted Chandelier, which saw a floating, musical chandelier bewitch sold-out audiences in Central Forest Park, Hanley; performances from the Royal Opera House, reimagined for the streets of Hanley at The Big Feast ‘17 and The Big Feast ‘18 and renowned installation Museum of the Moonby Luke Jerram, presented as part of The Big Feast ’18 at King’s Hall in Stoke and visited by over 9000 people from across the city and beyond.

Theresa Heskins, New Vic Theatre’s Artistic Director, said: “Stoke is a city on the up. Making it a great place to live and work is fundamental to the New Vic’s mission, and this award is testament to the tremendous success of the Appetite programme in helping to achieve this. We’re thrilled that we’ll be able to continue working with our partners and with local communities to engage more local people with the arts and enable and support additional, exciting large scale activities like the upcoming Light Night Stoke-on-Trent. Our thanks to Arts Council England for continuing to invest in our area to realise this goal.”

Councillor Abi Brown, Deputy Leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “This is such fantastic news. The additional funding will enable more people in Stoke-on-Trent to experience and be inspired by culture – and continues to build on the legacy from our shortlisted bid to be UK City of Culture 2021. We have already  enjoyed a lively and diverse menu of world-class cultural events, which more than 450,000 people in Stoke-on-Trent have seen since 2013 – and long may it continue.”

Appetite Director, Gemma Thomas said, “We’re thrilled to receive this investment from Arts Council England into the Appetite programme and our work in, with and for Stoke-on-Trent. This continued investment alongside partnership investment will see our work with local people as part of our Supper Club continue as we develop and deliver our annual festival in Stoke-on-Trent city centre, The Big Feast. We’ve made positive, long-term change for the arts and culture and crucially, people’s lives in the local area. We look forward to seeing what we can achieve by March 2022.”

Announcing the Light Night Stoke-on-Trent Headline Act!

Delivered by Appetite in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Cultural Forum, Light Night Stoke-on-Trent, the brand-new event for the city which will see Burslem Town Centre magnificently lit up from 31 January to 2 February, has announced their headline event: Sense of Unity.

Taking place on Friday 1 February and Saturday 2 February at 7:30pm, specialist German, outdoor puppeteers, Dundu will bring two gentle giants of light to life in Burslem Town Centre accompanied by high-octane live music from renowned percussion ensemble, Worldbeaters in a premiere collaboration performance, Sense of Unity.

Sense of Unity combines visual spectacle, live music and snippets of audience interaction, to bring the community together for an evening of captivating, free outdoor theatre.

As night falls the Worldbeaters will lead the procession through the town in search of the puppets, performing high-energy beats on their unique LED-lit drums and setting the atmosphere for the performance.

Once discovered, the audience encounters the world of Dundu. The puppet’s transparent, flexible bodies, made up of a weave of individual fiber strands, will be lit from the inside, illuminating them against the darkening evening sky. Dundu will be handled and steered by a team of five skilled puppeteers who collectively breathe life into the figures as they interact with the audience. Dundu, either as baby or giant adult is a gentle soul, sharing love and light where he goes.

Audiences are invited to enjoy the different musical worlds: from the West African Kora of Dundu, to the world inspired drumming riffs and rhythms of Worldbeaters, whilst accompanying Dundu on their unique journey through Burslem.

Abi Brown, Deputy Leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: ‘We’re thrilled to be presenting this world-renowned live performance at the inaugural Light Night Stoke-on-Trent. Sense of Unity will be a magical and moving procession through the town centre which will truly bring the whole city together. ‘

Fabian of Dundu and Chris and Alex of Worldbeaters said, “We are really happy to be working together and look forward to sharing the light and shaking it out loud with everyone in Stoke-on-Trent as part of this fantastic event for the city.’

Light Night Stoke-on-Trent is match funded by Arts Council England and Stoke-on-Trent City Council and will take place in Burslem Town Centre from Thursday 31 January to Saturday 2 February 2019. Sense of Unity will be performed on Friday 1 February and Saturday 2 February at 7:30pm. Light Night Stoke-on-Trent: Announcing the North Staffs Artist Commissions

Light Night Stoke-on-Trent is a brand-new event for the city delivered by Appetite in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Cultural Forum which will see Burslem Town Centre over three evenings magnificently lit up with a programme of world class animated projections, glistening musical parades and light artworks.

In collaboration with the Stoke-on-Trent Cultural Champions, Light Night Stoke-on-Trent created an open call commission opportunity especially for North Staffordshire-based artists to create new light-based work for this event which builds on the legacy of the UK City of Culture 2021 bid.

We are delighted to announce the two successful local companies being commissioned are: Filament Projects with ‘Extra Yarn’ and The Social Agencywith ‘Hours of Darkness’.

Filament is a North Staffordshire-based collaboration between theatre-maker and education practitioner Sarah Richardson and producer Helen Slevin, formed out a desire to create exciting and varied theatrical experiences for all and to bring live drama experiences to those who might otherwise struggle to access them. Adapted from a book by Mac Barnett, Extra Yarn is an interactive performance for everyone aged 4 and up telling the tale of Annabelle and her dog Mars who set about transforming their bleak town with a miraculous box of yarn.

Helen Slevin, Filament Producer said: ‘Filament are delighted to be one of the locally commissioned artists for Light Night Stoke-on-Trent. Extra Yarn is a story we have been eager to tell for some time, and this beautiful tale of a small girl transforming her community (through extreme knitting!) really seemed to chime with the City of Culture bid and its effect on the city. We are excited to be delivering the commission in partnership with a host of local artists, including Daniella Beattie and Paul Rogerson.’

The Social Agency is an arts-based support group for autistic and/or learning-disabled adults, facilitated by Rideout (Creative Arts for Rehabilitation) which specialises in work with people from marginalised communities. The Social Agency has been commissioned to create a giant installation in the form of an illuminated lantern brain. Realised in collaboration with local artists Richard Redwin and B-arts’ Hilary Hughes with sound by Toby White, Hours of Darkness features a series of short films exploring the things that keep us awake at night.

Saul Hewish, Director of Rideout said: ‘The Social Agency is thrilled to be commissioned to produce a piece of work to be included in this prestigious event. It is rare for our group members, whom are all autistic or learning disabled, to have the chance to share their artwork in a public space, and Light Night Stoke-on-Trent gives us a fantastic opportunity to work with local professional artists to help us express both our creativity and ideas.’

The commissions were awarded by a panel including the Stoke-on-Trent Cultural Champions, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Appetite.

Gemma Thomas, Appetite Director who sat on the panel said: ‘It was really important to us, our partners and the Cultural Champions that North Staffordshire-based artists had the opportunity to create new work for the inaugural Light Night Stoke-on-Trent programme. We’re pleased to have commissioned two organisations with a breadth of ideas and to work with the Stoke-on-Trent Cultural Champions to design the brief and be a part of the commissioning process as decision-makers. We can’t wait to see what the new work looks and feels like and find out what the people of the city and visitors to the event think about the projects.’

You can experience Extra Yarn and Hours of Darkness as part of Light Night Stoke-on-Trent, taking place in Burslem Town Centre from Thursday 31 January to Saturday 2 February 2019. Find out more and keep up to date with further programme announcements as they are made here.
