Appetite receives a further year of funding!

We are in the audience of a large crowd watching a modern-day circus spectacle outside of the Spitfire Gallery of The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery. The performance is taking place on a piece of grey, square flooring bordered on two sides by the museum, and the other two by the crowd sitting on benches and the floor. The performers, dressed in everyday clothes, are in and around a tall structure of criss-crossed bamboo poles. Four are in motion around the base, one is hanging onto the bamboo close to the floor, legs wrapped around the poles, and a sixth performer is high up in the bamboo, standing up with one leg out behind him. In the background behind the museum, you can see the multi-coloured, hexagonal façade of One Smithfield, and a bottle kiln.

We’re pleased to share the news that Appetite have been awarded extension funding (2025-26) by Arts Council England, as part of their Creative People and Places programme. Across the next year we’ll continue to build on our successes of the past 11 years, offering the local communities of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme opportunities to experience the arts and be inspired by events designed with them, and the places where they live, at their heart.

Alongside our lead organisation New Vic Theatre and consortium partners – Partners in Creative Learning, 6Towns Radio, Staffordshire University, Go Kidsgrove, Keele University and Newcastle Business Improvement District (BID) – we’ve been celebrating culture and creativity with people in our local area for more than a decade.

Read on to learn about how funding from Arts Council England has enriched the lives of people across the country through local arts and culture initiatives, and their pledge to continue to do so in the coming years.

A large, diverse crowd are watching a performance on Piccadilly in Stoke-on-Trent City Centre (Hanley). Some are sitting on benches with others standing all around them in a semi-circle. The performance can't be seen, but the audience are clearly enjoying what they are watching. people are clapping, smiling and taking photos.
A man and two women performers are dancing. They are dressed in 1950s costumes, with the women in dresses in pastel taffeta and silk, while the man wears a white tuxedo jacket, black bowtie and trousers, and a dodgy black wig. The dance they are doing is The Swim, one arm reaching over and forward while the other swings out behind. Behind the performers, a crowd of audience members are joining in with the dance. And just behind the them all is the entrance o Stoke-on-Trent City Centre bus station with an electronic timetable board visible through the doors.

Creative People and Places

Appetite CPP is part of the Creative People and Places programme,  supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Thanks to National Lottery players, Creative People and Places is about more people taking the lead in choosing, creating and taking part in creative and cultural experiences in the places where they live.

Since 2012, there have been over 15 million engagements with the CPP programme and 90%[1] of people who participate in CPP weren’t previously engaging regularly with creativity and culture.

Find out more about each project, the difference the programme has made and our learning.
